Power Wheelchair Technician – ABC Health Care – Richmond (Saunders) – Richmond, VA

Job Summary:
ABC Health Care (ABC) is a fast-growing medical equipment provider with offices in Hampton Roads, Richmond, and Charlottesville area. We provide scooters, custom manual wheelchairs, custom seating, power wheelchairs, wheelchair ramps, patient lifts, and wheelchair repairs. The technician will coordinate with the logistics manager, Assistive Technology Professionals, and administrative staff to ensure timely order, receipt, assembly, and delivery of seating and mobility positioning systems. This position requires someone who is dedicated and punctual, and can balance compassion and kindness with purpose and professionalism.

The ideal candidate is a quick learner who can retain knowledge and training. The candidate should also demonstrate initiative and the ability to work with their hands, work with customers, and handle administrative tasks. Qualifying candidates must display technical / mechanical skills and would be able to quickly diagnose / repair devices. The candidate must be able to think on their feet to solve problems and solutions in a timely matter. Also, previous experience working on wheelchairs, scooters, and power wheelchairs is highly preferred.

Responsibilities / Tasks:

  • Build and prepare new wheelchairs/scooters
  • Assembles seating and mobility equipment in a timely manner; makes necessary equipment modifications to prepare goods for delivery to the patient; includes custom seating & sizing to meet patient needs
  • Attends seating clinics with the ATP’s as necessary to assist with evaluations, modifications and deliveries
  • Delivers equipment as directed by the logistics manager and assists the ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) with fitting adjustment and equipment modification to ensure the best possible product for the patient
  • Trains clients on safe use of company equipment
  • Performs troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repairs on clients’ devices (scooters, wheelchairs, power chairs, other mobility devices, etc.)
  • Travel to customers house for installs, evaluations, and repairs; travel will be primarily focused to Hampton Roads & Richmond areas but can include all ABC services areas from time to time
  • Responds to service calls and makes repairs as needed in the office and in the field
  • Assists in the timely completion of work orders, which may involve but is not limited to, research of components, calculation and extension of equipment price and preparation of quotes for patients, referral sources and insurance companies.
  • Obtains estimates for repairs and schedules needed work
  • Responsible for all shipping and receiving duties related to daily operations; ensures timely receipt through tracking of purchase orders and maintains communication with vendors on orders received with damaged or missing goods
  • Insures manager is informed of needed repairs and maintenance
  • Provides inventory control for all special orders and stock items in the office; maintains shop area in a neat and organized manner to insure proper care of equipment
  • Receiving and unboxing packages daily
  • Clean equipment
  • Assists with quarterly physical count of inventory goods
  • Maintains Automobile Log on company vehicles & Daily Log of all activities
  • Maintain detailed files and digital records of every project
  • Assist with deliveries of larger devices (2-man deliveries)
  • Provide phone support to customers when needed

Qualifications / Skills / Experience:

  • Certified Power Wheelchair Technician preferred; or experience in electrical, electrical motor and light mechanic experience. If not certified, will need to obtain and maintain with the company.
  • Experience making and/or assembling assigned assistive technology equipment; including measurements, model modifications, and layout under the guidance of and in consultation with certified Assistive Technology Professional.
  • 1-2 years of wheelchair repair strongly preferred
  • Inventory & warehouse experience preferred
  • Customer Service experience and effective communication skills
  • Effective organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse, multi-cultural environment
  • Independent problem solver

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate of High School (or comparable education via Adult Learning or Vocational educational provider)
  • 3 years experience in general electrical technical service including (but not limited to):
  • Electrical wiring (residential, industrial, or vehicular)
  • Electric motor service & repair
  • Motor controls, control panels, panel circuits/wire and conduit
  • Troubleshooting circuits
  • Ability to read and understand technical schematic and repair instructions
  • Ability to perform custom modifications to metal or plastic when determined necessary including (but not limited to) drilling, cutting, bending, extending, tap/die, etc.
  • Overall mechanical & electrical aptitude with familiarity of most hand and power tools
  • Basic computer & tablet skills
  • Motivated, self starter that can work independently
  • Professional presentation of self
  • Must be able to lift > 75 lbs
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged standing, bending, stooping and lifting
  • Must pass drug screening
  • Must pass background screening
  • Must be 21 years of age due to company insurability guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
