Job Description

CSS is seeking a facilities maintenance technician in support of NOAA’S Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, SC.  This is a full-time position with generous health and welfare benefits. Duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Perform routine, daily inspection and maintenance to laboratory building exterior/interior
  • Perform a variety of tasks in connection with laboratory operational maintenance, repair and construction. Tasks will support scientific research activities including building scientific support, operational laboratory support, as well as overall facility operations.
  • Perform installation, maintenance, repair, and construction in the building maintenance trades, such as carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, carpet, and mechanics.
  • Receive goods and materials and check them against purchase orders and delivery documentation to ensure accuracy and proper condition of merchandise.
  • Maintain shelving in clean and orderly condition.
  • Inspect properties and communicate with management regarding proper grounds keeping and general cleanup and maintenance.
  • Perform daily grounds keeping; inspect outside of Distribution Center areas, insure disposal areas are kept clean and in a safe condition.
  • Maintain accurate records of preventative maintenance schedules, and Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • May perform weekly safety checks throughout the facility to ensure a safe and clean environment for the patrons of the facility and eliminate any hazards.


Qualifications

  • At least one year experience as a semi-skilled worker in one or more of the basic building maintenance trades and/or one year experience in a warehouse distribution operation
  • Knowledge of manual and electrical hand tools
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include off-shift hours and weekend assignments
  • Preferred requirements: ability to operate a forklift, light truck, and other related motorized equipment

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • 1 year of related employment in building maintenance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift and stack objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and frequently exert 10 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects
  • Work involves frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing ladders and staircases
  • Work involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting/turning and reaching; bending at the waist. Indoor/Outdoor work environment with exposure to weather extremes
  • Must be able to perceive the nature of sound, utilize near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, and possess the manual dexterity to handle and work with various materials and objects which are essential aspects of this position.
